Garmin Fenix in space with NASA
Garmin has announced that its Fenix smartwatches are being used in the Fram2 human spaceflight mission to support scientific research on the effects of space travel on the mind and body. The all-civilian crew wears the devices, allowing researchers to continuously monitor biometrics such as heart rate, pulse oxygen, and body battery on a single battery charge.
Garmin Health Senior Director Jörn Watzke stated that the smartwatch has been tested to endure the conditions of space travel. The device’s durability and extended battery life enable researchers to collect data without interruption.

The Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at Baylor College of Medicine is leading studies focused on human health in space. TRISH Deputy Director and Chief Engineer Jimmy Wu noted that physiological data from the crew will be included in the EXPAND database, contributing to research on medical conditions and mental health challenges during missions.
Fram2 is the first human spaceflight to enter a polar orbit to study Earth’s polar regions. It is also the second private spaceflight to incorporate Garmin smartwatch technology in scientific research.
