Audio panel capability added to GTR 205 COMM radios by Garmin

Garmin has introduced updates for the GTR 205 and GTR 205x slimline COMM radios, adding optional integrated audio panel capabilities. The enhancements include a four-place intercom, dual-COMM switching and COMM playback, providing a combined COMM radio and audio panel solution for both certified and experimental aircraft.

The new four-place intercom expands communication beyond the co-pilot to include passengers. Individual volume controls are available for the pilot and co-pilot, with a combined setting for passengers. Each position has a dedicated mic-in for auto-squelch, allowing the system to adjust mic sensitivity based on cockpit noise levels. A pilot-isolate function enables the pilot to focus on COMM radio communications while the co-pilot and passengers communicate separately or listen to music.

Dual-COMM switching allows the GTR 205 and GTR 205x to manage an additional COMM radio when connected via an AUX input, functioning similarly to a dedicated audio panel. Pilots can select which radio to transmit and monitor. A backup mode automatically connects the pilot’s headset to the second radio if the GTR 205 or GTR 205x loses power. The system includes four AUX inputs, two of which support optional stereo pairing and can be used for functions such as a second COMM or audio alerts.

The new COMM playback capability records up to 150 seconds of radio transmissions, enabling pilots to review clearances and missed calls. Clips can be accessed through the display menu, customizable softkeys or an optional button via a discrete input.

The GTR 205 and GTR 205x feature a sunlight-readable colour LCD display within a 1.35-inch bezel, making them suitable for space-constrained instrument panels. The radios provide 10 watts of power as standard, with an optional 16-watt variant available. A standby frequency monitoring function allows pilots to listen to a secondary frequency while tuned to an active ATC channel. The worldwide frequency database simplifies frequency searches by airport identifier, while frequency memory and instant recall improve efficiency. A built-in timer supports various in-flight procedures such as approaches and holds.

Bluetooth connectivity enables pilots to pair a smartphone or compatible device to stream music and control playback through the GTR 205 display. The system also supports incoming call management, displaying phone numbers, signal strength and battery life. Adjustable EQ settings offer bass boost and preset audio profiles for different music preferences.

The new audio panel features for the GTR 205 and GTR 205x are expected to be available in Q2 2025. New and existing units can be upgraded via an optional enablement, available for purchase on flyGarmin.com or through Garmin-authorised dealers.
