Garmin Instinct 3 Review – our take as the5krunner adds his opinion
Based on: the5krunner Garmin Instinct Review (50mm AMOLED)
The Garmin Instinct 3 continues the series’ rugged design and focus on outdoor durability, offering features such as solar charging, an AMOLED display (on select models), and long battery life. It provides essential navigation tools, including TracBack and waypoint navigation, but lacks full onboard maps.
While the device is well-suited for general outdoor enthusiasts, the absence of maps may be a limiting factor for serious adventurers. The breadcrumb navigation system and smartphone connectivity offer some solutions, but they do not fully replace an on-device map. The Instinct 3 also lacks route creation and intelligent re-routing, making navigation less flexible than models like the Garmin Fenix 7.

Battery performance is strong, particularly on the Solar model, with extended life in power-saving modes. The AMOLED variant delivers a high-quality display but does not fully capitalise on its potential due to the lack of mapping. Other features include a built-in torch, durable MIL-STD-810 construction, and health-tracking features.
At launch, the Instinct 3 faced market confusion, with older Garmin models offering similar or better features at lower prices. Garmin’s pricing strategy appears based on brand loyalty and ecosystem retention rather than direct competition. Despite its limitations, the watch is expected to sell well, primarily due to the strong reputation of the Instinct series and its appeal to users who prioritise durability and battery life over advanced navigation.
For users who require maps or more advanced navigation, alternatives such as the Garmin Fenix series, Suunto Race S, or even budget-friendly options like the Amazfit T-Rex 3 may be more suitable.
Our Take Out
the5krunner reviews tend to be more critical than other mainstream reviewers; however, this review aligns with the general view that Garmin Instinct 3 should have maps at its price. Interestingly, the5krunner discusses workarounds to the lack of maps.
