Garmin Launches Alpha XL: A Combined Vehicle Navigator and Dog Tracking Device
Garmin has introduced the Alpha XL, a vehicle-based navigation system designed for hunters that integrates advanced GPS functionality with dog tracking and training capabilities. The device has a 10-inch touchscreen display and is compatible with Garmin’s dog collars, allowing users to manage their hunting activities and monitor their dogs from the vehicle or on foot.
Navigation and Mapping Features
The Alpha XL provides turn-by-turn navigation for roads and trails using preloaded North American topographic and street maps. It supports multiple satellite systems, including GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo, offering enhanced location tracking. Hunters can access additional mapping features through the optional Outdoor Maps+ subscription, which provides land ownership details, updated topographic maps, and public land boundaries.
Dog Tracking and Training
With the ability to track up to 20 dogs at a range of up to nine miles, the Alpha XL eliminates the need for a separate handheld tracking device. The system pairs directly with compatible Garmin dog collars, displaying real-time tracking data and enabling users to directly issue training commands, such as tone, vibration, or stimulation, from the touchscreen. Additional metrics, such as distance travelled and time spent afield, are displayed to monitor each dog’s performance during a hunt.
The Channel View feature helps reduce signal interference by allowing users to identify less congested channels for collar communication. The device can store up to 250 dog profiles, simplifying the management of active groups across multiple hunts.

Rugged Design and Portability
The Alpha XL is designed to be mounted in vehicles but can also be used as a portable device for up to two hours after being removed from its dock. Its rugged construction includes water resistance, and the large screen remains readable in various lighting conditions.
Connectivity and Safety
For hunters operating in remote areas, the Alpha XL can pair with Garmin’s inReach satellite communication devices, providing access to two-way messaging and emergency SOS features via the Iridium satellite network.
Availability
The Garmin Alpha XL is now available for purchase at a suggested retail price of $1,199.99.
