Garmin Instinct 3 Design Process

Garmin has unveiled the latest iteration of its rugged smartwatch series, the Instinct 3, marking a significant milestone in its product design journey. The development process adhered to Garmin’s meticulous approach, beginning with a detailed project brief and culminating in a wearable device that seamlessly combines functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The project began with a comprehensive brief from the project manager, outlining critical specifications such as material options and key components—for instance, the inclusion of a flashlight or a specific battery size. From there, the design team analyzed market trends and identified the target audience, creating image boards for visual inspiration.

“Sketching was a pivotal phase,” a Garmin representative explained. “Our team explored countless design ideas, translating concepts into tangible forms.” The iterative process included extensive 3D modeling, with nearly 100 physical prototypes produced. These prototypes allowed the team to refine minute details, ensuring that the final design offered optimal functionality and aesthetic appeal.

“To an outsider, the differences between Concept A and Concept B might seem negligible,” the representative noted. “However, these variations were critical in determining the best options for our customers.”

The Instinct 3 introduces several new design elements, including the addition of a built-in flashlight and customizable display options. Users can now choose between an MIP solar display and a new AMOLED display, catering to diverse preferences and use cases. The case is crafted from polymer-reinforced plastic or glass-filled nylon, providing exceptional rigidity and durability. The chemically strengthened glass—including Gorilla Glass options—ensures resistance against scratches and impacts, making it ideal for outdoor adventures.

The metal-reinforced bezel is another standout feature. Machined from a single piece of aluminum and anodized in bright colors, it adds a visually striking element while serving a dual purpose as a GPS antenna. This innovative integration exemplifies Garmin’s commitment to blending design and functionality.

The Instinct 3 is set to redefine expectations for outdoor smartwatches, embodying Garmin’s dedication to innovation and excellence. With its robust design and advanced features, it is poised to become an essential companion for explorers and athletes alike.
